A history of Heritage plates

Victoria’s first registration plates were issued in the early 1930s.  Each plate was meticulously hand-crafted on black vitreous enamel, embossed with white reflective paint. Issued between 1932 and 1939, the original plate combinations ranged from 2 to 285.000.

Our current Heritage plates, are faithful replicas of the original Victorian vitreous enamel number plates, issued in the 1930s. Still to this day, our Heritage plates remain handcrafted using the same time-honoured techniques from that era, giving them a distinctive look and lustrous shine.

More about Victoria’s most iconic number plate

  • Victoria's first number plates were issued between 1932 and 1939, with combinations ranging from 1 – 285.000 (Some exclusions apply for Special Interest plates).
  • Each character is manually embossed into a heavy gauge steel plate, etched and coated with rich black and white vitreous enamel. The plate is then oven-baked to create a high gloss and durable finish.
  • Because Heritage plates are handcrafted, each plate differs slightly, contributing to its unique nature.
  • Heritage plates are presented in a crafted wooden box, along with a certificate of authenticity and Heritage Plates brochure.
  • A box, certificate and brochure are also included when ordering two replacement plates. (Replacement plates can be purchased over the phone or at VicRoads Customer Service Centres).

Heritage plates are generally available only by special release or auction. Combinations are 3-6 characters which are numerical only.

  • 3 Digit 100 to 999
